Das Buch entstand, als die free-lance Verlegerin und Journalistin Jeremy Joan Hews eine Gruppe um Jay Beckwith traf, die jeweils am Sonntag Vormittag im Zoo von San Francisco Spielumgebungen für Zootiere bauten. Eigentlich wollte sie nur Material für ihre Reportage sammeln, aber die Atmosphäre war so fesselnd, dass sie viele Sonntage mit der Gruppe im Zoo verbrachte. Von da an arbeitete sie mit Jay für verschiedene Projekte zusammen. Ein solches Projekt wurde auch das Buch „Build your own Playground“, das Spielplatzprojekte von Nachbarschaftsgruppen in Kalifornien dokumentiert. Es gibt Bauanleitungen, zeigt Leute beim gemeinschaftlichen Bauen und Kinder beim Spielen.
1973 fand Beckwith’s Ausstellung „We build our own playground“ im M.H. de Young Museum in San Francisco statt.
